6 Favorite Music Moments from Television

Growing up, I collected a lot of movie soundtracks. Songs always seemed to mean more to me when paired with a poignant moment from a movie I loved. I was the same with songs from television shows. But alas, I did not grow up in the era of iTunes or Spotify. I was, however, the child of cassette tapes and would sometimes go so far as to record my favorite songs on my cassette player. Let’s just say the quality was not good.

Nowadays, whenever a song from a television show sticks with me, you can bet that I will be downloading it the next day to relive that moment again and again. So here it is: My list of songs that really stuck with me from television shows. This isn’t to say that these are the best musical moments from a television series hands down. But these are the songs that will always have a special place in my heart.

Come Sail Away

6. Freaks and Geeks: “Come Sail Away” by Styx

I was late to the game with this show, having only watched it for the first time at the start of this year, but I had always heard how great it was. I mean, you can’t go wrong with that cast (James Franco has never looked so good). But it was this scene from the pilot that assured me I was going to enjoy this short-lived series. As Sam awkwardly takes his crush, Cindy, on to the dance floor for a slow dance, things only get more awkward when the music transitions from slow to upbeat. But eventually, the awkwardness breaks and everyone just has fun. I love how joyous this moment is. Plus, you get your first sneak peek at how awesome Busy Phillip’s character secretly is.

Hey

5. How I Met Your Mother: “Hey” by Pixies

Before Robin became insufferable…before the on-again-off-again relationship between her and Barney was exhausted…and even before Craig Thomas and Carter Bays completely ruined this entire show with an awful series finale…before all that, there was this wonderful scene from the all-around disappointing season 7 in an episode titled “Disaster Averted.” Robin and Barney find themselves alone in a taxi cab and suddenly can no longer keep their hands to themselves. They kissed; I rejoiced. And then I immediately tracked down the name of this song by the Pixies to play on repeat.

When A Man Loves A Woman

4. The Wonder Years: “When a Man Loves a Woman” by Percy Sledge

This show had a lot out of outstanding music moments, which is primarily the reason why it’s taken so long to get this timeless series out on DVD! But this classic moment from the pilot will stand the test of time. It’s here that viewers took notice and realized they were about to witness the start of something magical. The main character, Kevin, follows the girl next door, Winnie, into the woods as she mourns the death of her veteran brother. He shoulders her tears and reassures her that everything is going to be okay. Then they share their first kiss, and the wonderful golden oldie by Percy Sledge plays in the background. “There were moments that made us cry with laughter. And there were moments, like that one, of sorrow and wonder.”

Creature Fear

3. Chuck: “Creature Fear” by Bon Iver

If you’ve never watched “Chuck,” then you are missing out. This show is amazing and has loads of magical music moments. (Honorable mention: “Mr. Roboto” by Jeffster) My favorite one is from the season 2 episode “Chuck Versus the Colonel.” Chuck and Sarah, a couple everyone rooted for until the very end, wake up in each other’s arms while on another spy mission. (“I was full by your count. I was lost but your fool. Was a long visit wrong? Say you are the only.”) Then suddenly, as the music swells, their lips locked and fans everywhere screamed for joy.

Off I Go

2. Grey’s Anatomy: “Off I Go” by Greg Laswell

“Grey’s Anatomy” has had its ups and downs, and season 5 was the beginning of this series’ descent (hello there, Ghost Denny). But there was one saving grace throughout the course of this tumultuous season, and that was the finale. If the stunning revelation that George O’Malley was John Doe this entire time wasn’t enough to bring you to tears, then that entire final sequence will. As Izzie readies herself her soul for death, we see her ride the elevator while wearing her prom dress from the day that Denny died. However, as the elevator doors open, and the song’s hook breaks, she is greeted by an unexpected guest: George O’Malley, in full army uniform. The looks they exchange utterly break my heart. I can’t listen to this song without tearing up a little. “It might all be gone tomorrow.”

Dice

1. The O.C.: “Dice” by Finley Quaye

Another series that had MANY outstanding music moments—too many to count! While Imogen Heap’s “Hide & Seek” or Jeff Buckley’s “Hallelujah” may be more memorable, it’s this moment that makes me smile, topping the list as my favorite television moment. I love watching Ryan run up those stairs—in slow motion, mind you—desperate to reach Marissa in time for that New Year’s kiss. And as messed up as Marissa was, she really did love that boy. To see them kiss amidst the confetti and this romantic song, and to hear Ryan finally declare his feelings for Marissa, was mesmerizing. Plus, I will always enjoy watching Oliver suffer defeat. Ugh! Oliver! You’re the worst!

There were a lot of kisses to romantic songs on this list. Maybe I should have called this list “Favorite Kisses from Television.” Regardless, what are some of your favorite music moments from television?

What I’m Craving: 26th Birthday Wishes

February is my month and I’m celebrating it the only way I know how: with all of my friends. And just because I really liked the birthday wish list I made for the big 2-5 last year, I decided to make another one for the even bigger 2-6.

1. Happy Endings, The Complete First Season

I discovered this show only a couple months ago, and I am so happy that I did. As far as I’m concerned, it’s shaping up to be the next Friends. (And if you know me at all, you know that’s a big statement coming from me, seeing as how I’m one of the biggest Friends fans out there.) The show features an ensemble cast, which is very similar to Friends, but doesn’t include a laugh track or the dated multi-camera set up. Six pals living in Chicago (formerly engaged couple Dave and Alex, married couple Brad and Jane, and single friends Max and Penny) face everyday drama as hilarity ensues. I highly recommend this show to anyone looking for a laugh. My library is just begging for this DVD addition.

2. Naked 2 eyeshadow palette by Urban Decay

I am a huge fan of Urban Decay. Their colors last all day and the company adds just the right amount of shimmer to their palettes, perfect for a girl who lives for glitter and sequins. This neutral set of eyeshadows would immediately put a smile on my face. Imagine all the endless color combinations I could enjoy. Limitless, just limitless.

3. Veronica flats by Tahari

As much as I love heels, I could use some more adorable flats for occasions that just don’t lend themselves to heels. These flats, found on Piperlime, will keep my style chic and casual. (I’m a 9, in case anyone was curious. :))

4. The Muppet’s Collection Rainbow Connection nail polish by OPI

Is there anyone on this planet who can listen to the Muppet’s classic “Rainbow Connection” and not lose themselves in a smile? If so, they must not have a soul. Harsh? Maybe. But I am a HUGE fan of the Muppets, and I just can’t fathom why anyone else wouldn’t be. I grew up on Muppet Babies and reruns of The Muppet Show, so of course I saw the new Muppet movie on opening night. And when I learned that OPI was releasing a Muppet collection, I couldn’t wait to get my hands on one of the colors. So why, may you ask, have I not yet? Sheer laziness. Someone please surprise me with this glitter polish.

5. Cordoba clutch by Elliot Lucca

Clutches are the perfect addition to any night out. And this one (another Piperlime find) seems to fit me to a tee. I absolutely adore the color and gold braided chain. Just imagine me sporting it at fabulous parties and cocktail hours. Picture it!

Thanks for humoring me once again in what is basically a “I want all these things!” post. Now it’s my turn to humor you. What are you currently obsessed with? Leave me a comment and let me know. I’d love to check it out.

What I’m Craving: 25th Birthday Wishes

This weekend is my birthday celebration. I thought I’d help you out with a few gift ideas. (But mostly I just wanted an excuse to share my latest obsessions.)

1. Maui Wowie by Urban Decay

2010 was a great year—that’s the year I discovered Urban Decay. This company makes spectacular eyeshadow with strong lasting power; Maui Wowie is by far my favorite of their array of colors. I own it in an Urban Decay eye shadow palette, but I hate using it because I feel like the more I use it, the less I have to use in the future. (If you hadn’t noticed, it’s a little pricey.) It’s great for everyday use and can easily be intensified with complementary colors for going out. It’s a greenish-gold with hints of silver and has just the right amount of sparkle. (i.e. People won’t confuse me with a sparklepire.)

2. ModCloth gift certificate

Thank God for Facebook ads. (You know, those creepy ads that tell you when you need to lose weight or try to convince you that, because you’re married, you must have children and want to buy them things?) I was so intrigued by a ModCloth ad that I actually clicked on the link. What I found was a shopping website that offers an array of clothes that can easily be described as retro, vintage or indie. I can’t get enough of this website—it’s constantly updated with new threads and, if they’re out of your size, they’ll email you as soon as it comes in!

3. Modern Family, The Complete First Season

If you don’t watch Modern Family I’m not so sure we can be friends. But maybe our friendship can survive if you buy me this DVD set to watch over and over again. I’ll let you borrow it. 🙂 (And if your favorite episode is not Fizbo, we may still find ourselves in an argument.)

4. Burberry London perfume

This scent has enticed me ever since I caught a whiff of it off my good friend kimberlyloc, who was wearing it at work. (I’m sure she thought I was coming on to her with my incessant “What ARE you wearing?” cries, but I swear I only wanted to know what she was wearing!) I rarely buy myself perfume, so if I don’t score a bottle for my birthday I’m going to have to shell out the dough for this one. (My Euphoria by Calvin Klein bottle is starting to run low.) It’s slightly floral and not at all overpowering. Its top notes are rose, honeysuckle, jasmine, peony and clementine; its solar notes are sandalwood, musk and patchouli.

5. Night Owl Boots by Chinese Laundry

I have been searching high and low for a pair of black leather over-the-knee boots. Have I found the mystery winner? I hope so! I’m pretty sure my awesome hubbie bought these chic beauties for my birthday, so here’s hoping they fit.

*Please excuse my poor cut-out techniques. I’ve never quite perfected it. (I think I ran into trouble with my “fancy” shadows.)
